McHendry: Starbucks, gospel — what a combo

September 23, 2006

Let's face it. Church coffee is usually pretty bland. I say that after five decades of coffee drinking in churches all over this great land of ours. Most churches generally use what ever is on sale or cheapest on the grocer's shelf.

But that was not the case at Larkridge Church Sunday. The brand it proudly serves between and after services happens to be my favorite — Starbucks. Regular or decaf, no less. I arrived just before 10:30 a.m., well ahead of the 10:45 a.m. start of the second service Sunday (the first service is at 9 a.m.). That gave me time for some great coffee, bagels and other snacks available for the taking. Since I hadn't had breakfast, I loaded up on those cute, little yellow cheese cubes and crackers they were serving.

Rock of ages:

Churches use modern rock music as an outreach tool

It's a little before 9 o'clock Sunday morning at Gunbarrel's Vinelife Church, but it feels more like 9 o'clock on a Saturday night at a mid-sized rock club.

Microphones are being checked, guitars are being tuned and adjustments are being made at a bank of light and sound mixing boards in the middle of the room. On stage, silhouetted by the sunlight coming through the church's giant west-facing windows, is a drum set and racks of electric guitars waiting to be played. A note in the program lets visitors know that complimentary earplugs are available to those who need them.

Larkridge Church doing worship well

By George McHendry

Friday, April 27, 2007

One of the things church pastors realize is that each Sunday's worship service is different from any other. Sometimes, all the pieces of the puzzle come together. And sometimes, for some unexplained reason, the pieces don't.

At Sunday's 10:45 a.m. service at Larkridge Church, all of the pieces came together.

Larkridge, which is holding services weekly at Vista Ridge Academy, isn't hard to find, since it's just north of Colo. 7 and just west of Sheridan Parkway. Just look for the school and lots of cars, and you'll be there.

Friendly people greeted me at the door Sunday, I poured myself a cup of coffee (Starbucks), enjoyed a bagel, and was part of a truly wonderful worship service that couldn't help but make you feel God was truly there in that place. It was a "wow" service.

Non-denominational churches handle baptism differently than mainline denominations, and Sunday's services were examples of that. In most "conventional" churches, babies are baptized, usually right after birth. In many churches, such as Larkridge, babies are "dedicated" and later baptized when the child is old enough to make a decision for Christ on his or her own.
